Viggo is the eldest child of Grace and Viggo P. Mortensen. His dad, who cultivated in Denmark, met his mom, a New Yorker, in Norway. They wedded and moved to New York where Viggo Jr. was conceived.
The family then moved to South America where Viggo Senior oversaw chicken homesteads and farms in Venezuela and Argentina. Two more children were conceived, Charles and Walter, before the marriage became progressively miserable.
